The IWPFI brings together experts from across many disciplines who study lung diseases and work on developing new imaging tools and applications to better understand the structure and function of the lungs.

The inaugural meeting of the IWPFI was held in Philadelphia in 2002, to address emerging clinical needs for improved diagnosis and assessment of various lung diseases through the development of novel image based approaches. 

Subsequent meetings have been held on Awaji Island (twice), Japan; in Heidelberg, Germany; Boston, USA; Madison, USA; Edinburgh, Scotland; Seoul, Korea and New Orleans, USA.
